Nova Scotia Beginner's Licence Practice Test 2025 — Free

Nova Scotia's graduated licensing program is administered by Access Nova Scotia, Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations, and Registry of Motor Vehicles. To obtain a Class 5 Beginner's licence you must be at least 16 years old, pass a vision screening, and pass the written knowledge test. The current test fee is approximately $27.05. As a Beginner you must maintain zero blood alcohol, drive only with a fully licenced supervisor, and may not drive between midnight and 5 a.m. After holding a Beginner's licence for at least 12 months, you are eligible for the road test for a Class 5 Novice licence.

The Nova Scotia knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions drawn from the Nova Scotia Driver's Handbook. You must answer at least 32 correctly (80%) to pass. Questions cover road signs, traffic rules, right-of-way, and graduated licensing restrictions. If you fail, you must wait a minimum of seven days before retaking the test. The test is administered on a computer at Access Nova Scotia service centres.

Nova Scotia's geography influences several exam topics. The province has a mix of urban areas, rural highways, and coastal roads. Questions address foggy and winter-driving conditions, the rules for sharing rural two-lane roads with large farm equipment, and the special driving rules applicable in school zones and near senior pedestrian crossing areas. The rules section also covers Nova Scotia's specific graduated licence restrictions: Beginners must have a supervisor in the front passenger seat, and Novice drivers face restrictions on the number of passengers under age 26 during the first 12 months of Novice status.

LicenceReady's Nova Scotia practice tests are aligned with the current Nova Scotia Driver's Handbook. Consistently reach 90%+ on our practice quizzes before visiting an Access Nova Scotia location. The handbook is available as a free PDF from the Nova Scotia government website.
